Hikes I did in August 2025

I'm "training" for an upcoming backpacking trip, so I did some day hikes this past August. I took advantage of a trip to visit my parents in Plattsburgh to do some hiking in Vermont and New York.

Sunday 8/17, Mount Mansfield (Vermont)

Nice hike from the west side (the trailhead was in Underhill State Park). Started off cloudy, was rainy, windy, and cold at the top. A good opportunity to try out my wet weather gear.

Friday 8/22, Whiteface Mountain (Adirondacks)

I also did Esther, a "trailless" peak close by. Started from a trailhead by the town of Wilmington's reservoir. Nice sunny day. Overlapped for a bit with a guy who was working on becoming a 46er. Esther was his 30th (making him an Aspiring 46er) and Whiteface was his 31st. He drove up from Rochester, leaving at 2am, and also hiked Cascade and Porter earlier the same day!

Saturday 8/23, Blueberry, Porter, and Cascade (Adirondacks)

Since the upcoming trip will be about 10 days, I hiked for a second day in a row to get my legs used to it. But I also enjoyed these hikes on their own. I happened to meet Tony Goodwin, who is well-known to Adirondack hikers, at the top of Cascade, and we chatted for a bit. (I had a 46er shirt on, so he knew I probably knew who he was.)

Saturday, 8/30: North and South Twin (New Hampshire)

Just a day trip from Boston. Overcast day but got some decent views from South Twin before the clouds descended and the rain started. My legs felt good. 11.2 miles and just over 4,000 feet of elevation gain in 5 1/2 hours.
